The concert Food as an instrument was a very personal and intimate piece because I performed with Lina, my wife, who is a visual artist and a great cook, and it addresses the importance of traditional Colombian food in the complex process of adaptation that we both experienced during our first year in Huddersfield. The piece was performed with live cooking sounds and field recordings from Caribbean Colombian recipes and also with environmental sounds from marketplaces in Bogota, and also in Palermo and London where we finally gathered some of the spices which are not available in the North of England. The concert was presented in a moment when the absence of sunlight in Huddersfield is dramatic and when the temperature reaches very low points, and we wanted to bring sunlight and heat with these flavoursome and colourful recipes, and through the crisp and soothing sounds product of their preparation.
